Drones have become a constant presence on Ukraine’s battlefields. Until recently, kamikaze-style drones depended on a radio link to reach their targets. But Russia has introduced drones guided by fiber-optic cables, leaving Ukraine racing to catch up.

Ukrainian brigades, including Azov and Khartiia, are now deploying fiber-optic drones — an innovation first seen in Russian operations in Kursk. These drones, tethered by durable cables, offer secure, terrain-resistant video feeds and are less vulnerable to jamming. However, their cables can become visible or snagged, risking exposure. Despite setup challenges, they’ve proven vital in uncovering hidden enemy positions and safely scouting buildings, marking a new phase in drone warfare.
