Tensions have been rising in Cameroon since the release of preliminary election results that put incumbent President Paul Biya ahead of opposition leader Issa Tchiroma. Biya, 92, has been heading the central African country’s government since 1982.

Police in Douala fired tear gas at protesters contesting the 2025 election results.

Supporters of opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary claim the vote was rigged in favor of long-time President Paul Biya.

Frustration in Cameroon is high among youth facing unemployment and decades of hardship under Biya’s rule.
