Turkey hosted delegates from a number of Muslim countries in an effort to stabilize the situation in the Gaza Strip.

The meeting, attended by Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Pakistan and Indonesia, aims to create an environment in which “Palestinians […] govern the Palestinians and ensure their own security.”

Israel meanwhile returned the remains of a further 45 Palestinians killed in Gaza in response to Hamas returning the remains of three Israeli hostages Sunday.

At least two people were killed and several others were wounded by Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon on Monday, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said.

The ministry said that an “Israeli enemy strike” on the town of Doueir in Nabatiyeh district killed one person and wounded seven others, while a second strike on Aita al-Shaab in the Bint Jbeil district killed one person.

The two men who were killed are said to be members of Hezbollah.

The Israeli military confirmed the attack, saying it had killed Mohammed Ali Hadid, who Israel alleged to be “a commander in Hezbollah’s Radwan Force in the Nabatieh area” who tried to “reestablish Hezbollah terror infrastructure sites.”

In the Aita al-Shaab incident, the army said it killed a Hezbollah member who “was observed attempting to gather intelligence on (Israeli) troops.”

Israel has repeatedly bombed Lebanon despite a November 2024 ceasefire that sought to end more than a year of hostilities with Hezbollah, with attacks against the militant group escalating in recent days.

Palestinians killed by Israeli fire near Rafah

Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire near Rafah on Monday, in an area that remains under Israeli control.

The incident is the latest to test the fragile US-backed ceasefire in the territory.

Israel’s military said its forces had identified and killed two alleged “terrorists” who crossed the yellow line, which marks areas the army still occupies, advancing towards Israeli and posing an immediate threat.

Gaza medics said three people were killed, and that one of those killed was a woman. The identities of the two others victims were not clear.

Palestinian health authorities have said some 239 people have been killed in strikes on Gaza since the ceasefire began to be implemented, while Israel has said three of its soldiers have been killed.

Former top Israeli army lawyer arrested over leaked abuse video

The former chief military advocate of the Israel Defense Forces was arrested on Monday, the national security minister said, after she admitted she leaked a video appearing to show soldiers abusing a Palestinian detainee.

Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi acknowledged that her office had released the video to the media last year. On Friday, the army announced that Tomer-Yerushalmi had resigned from her post.

Five reservists have already been formally charged over the video. Among the charges they faced was using a “sharp object” to stab detainee near the rectum.

“It was agreed that in light of last night’s events, the prison service would act with extra vigilance to ensure the detainee’s safety in the detention center,” National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said in a social media post.

The ultra-nationalist minister emphasized the “importance of … conducting the investigation professionally in order to uncover the full truth regarding the case that led to a blood libel against IDF soldiers.”

Tomer-Yerushalmi disappeared briefly on Sunday, after her family raised concerns about her safety and police found her abandoned car near a beach in Tel Aviv, Israel’s Channel 12 reported. She was found swiftly by authorities and arrested.

A judge extended her detention by 48 hours on Monday. The judge’s ruling said she was being held on suspicion of fraud, breach of trust and obstruction of justice.

Turkey hosts foreign ministers of Muslim countries

Turkey hosted representatives from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Pakistan and Indonesia on Monday to discuss the future of Gaza as the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas holds into its third week.

“Our principle is that Palestinians should govern the Palestinians and ensure their own security, the international community should support this in the best possible way — diplomatically, institutionally and economically,” Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said.

“Nobody wants to see a new system of tutelage emerge,” he told a news conference.

Fidan demanded that Israel stop its continued regular violations of the truce with Hamas and guarantee that humanitarian aid organizations are given access to Palestinians trapped in Gaza.

Among the issues discussed at the Istanbul meeting was the creation of an international stabilization force. Fidan said decisions on whether to send Turkish troops to watch over the truce will be weighed against progress at the UN regarding a mandate for the peacekeeping force.

Turkey has been one of the sharpest critics of Israeli military action in response to the Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023, and has accused Israeli leaders of looking for “excuses” to attack Hamas.

Israel has said it does not want Turkish troops deployed to Gaza and made clear that it must be allowed to protect itself against terrorists in the enclave.

Still, Turkey remains a key player in the peace process in Gaza, helping forward the effort to bring about a lasting ceasefire.

On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, railed against Israel’s “very poor [ceasefire] record.”

The current ceasefire plan foresees an international force take control of the enclave as Israeli troops pull back.

Israel on Monday handed over the remains of 45 Palestinians killed in Gaza.

That brings the total number of Palestinian bodies returned by Israel since the current ceasefire went into effect on October 10 up to 270 according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza.

The ceasefire stipulates that Israel return 15 dead Palestinians for every one hostage body returned by Hamas. Hamas returned caskets said to contain the remains of three dead Israelis on Sunday. Israeli forensics experts confirmed this to have been the case.
