Russia’s recent attack on a hospital in Kharkiv comes as Ukraine’s president prepares to meet his American counterpart in Washington on Friday. Former prime minister of Ukraine and Chairman of the Kyiv Security Forum, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, told DW that Russia’s President Putin is “not ready to cut any kind of deal” and that the pressure on Russia and its strategic partner China had to be kept up.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk served as prime minister of Ukraine between 2014 and 2016.

The following is an extract from the interview.

Deutsche Welle: Do you think [US President Donald Trump] is serious about his threat to send Tomahawks to Ukraine if Vladimir Putin doesn’t settle this war?

Arseniy Yatsenyuk: I just came back from DC, from Washington, and I can tell you for sure that Washington is slightly different than it was 12 months ago. But we have a very big space for maneuver, and I believe it’s important to realize that we have a very high chance to get along with President Trump and actually to make President Trump to get this Nobel Peace Prize. As you just mentioned, the US administration, together with the western world and the free world, managed to get a real ceasefire in Gaza. Now I hope that the US administration will refocus and redouble both its attention and its efforts to get the real peace, and I want to reiterate once again, the real peace in Ukraine, a fair, just and durable peace, not on Putin’s term. Cos after what happened in Anchorage, it’s clear for the Trump administration that Putin played President Trump, and the President of the United States is not ready to be humiliated, and he will definitely push back, and he will do his best in order to help Ukraine, as this is the best effort investment in the US national security.
